The Latest Social Media Scam is Abusing Facebook’s "Trusted Contact”

"Trusted Contact” is an account recovery feature - that sends secret access codes to a few of your close friends in order to help you regain access to your Facebook account in case you forgot your password or lost access to your account.

But If you receive a message from any of your Facebook friends asking for help to recover their Facebook account, don’t blindly believe it.

Researchers have detected a new Facebook scam, and here's how it goes:

  1. An attacker hacks the account of one of your friends
  2. The attacker pretends to be your friend, and asks you for help to get back into their account.
  3. The attacker explains that you are listed under "Trusted Contact"
  4. The attacker asks you to check your email for the recovery code and share it with them

What you don't know is that the code you just received is not the key to unlock your friend's account, but instead, the attacker initiated "Forgot my password" request for your account in an attempt to hijack YOUR Facebook account.

The best way to protect yourself is always to read the recovery message or email carefully, even if it is sent by one of your actual friends!
