Ashley Madison to Pay $11.2 Million to Data Breach Victims

Ashley Madison is an American dating website for married people looking to have an affair. The website helps married people cheat on their spouses.

Ashley Madison's Slogan: "Life is short. Have an affair.”

In July of 2015, the website was hacked and 37 million user's personal details were exposed. Hackers leaked nearly 100 gigabytes' worth of sensitive data belonging to these 37 million users onto the dark web.

The data included victims' usernames, first and last names, email addresses, passwords, credit card data information, addresses, phone numbers, and transactions records, which led to blackmails and even suicides.

Now Ashley Madison has just agreed to an $11.2 Million in settlement to the victims. That’s roughly 3500$/person.

The 2015 data breach cost the Toronto based company over a quarter of its revenue and forced it to spend millions of dollars to boost security and user privacy.

The funny thing is, the website is still operating with now more than 53 Million users.

The UK is Implementing an Age Verification System for Porn Sites:

UK’s digital minister Matt Hancock explained that they are taking the necessary steps to implement a new verification requirement for online pornography as part of their continuing work to make the Internet safe.

The Plan will force porn sites to use credit-card based age verification to verify users ages.

The new scheme will not be fully in place until April of 2018. Under the new scheme, the porn operators many of which are based abroad—will be required to insert age checkers on their sites in the UK, forcing users to share credit card details to prove that they are 18 or over before being granted access.

Sites that refuse to cooperate face may have to pay fines of up to £250,000, will not be granted online payment facilities in the UK, will not be able to advertise on the site and may even get their website blocked.

People are now worried that when the porn sites gain access to their credit card information, it can then be linked to specific users which prevents their porn habits from being anonymous.

The Open Rights Group director argued that “the databases of the UK's porn habits, could then be vulnerable to Ashley Madison style hacks,”.
